We Did a Number on 2016!

Tom Callahan

The days are slowly but surely getting longer, snow is still falling, and spring skiing seems closer than ever. All of us here at Alaska Huts are excited for what’s to come, but we wanted to take a quick look back at what happened in 2016. Thanks to the incredible support from all of our members, volunteers, cabin users and supporters we have some fantastic accomplishments to look back on. To put things in perspective, here’s some numbers from the past year.

$17,552

The number of membership dollars raised. It was an incredible year for fundraising and we’re so grateful to all of our members for supporting our mission to create outdoor opportunities for children, families, and all people in our great state. (We love you guys so much, we even rolled out a new membership incentive program! Check it out to see what great benefits you can receive for being an Alaska Huts member.)

 2,992

The number of beds rented at Manitoba Cabin throughout the year! With nearly double our occupancy from 2015, we are excited to see how many people are taking the opportunity to join us and explore the outdoors with family and friends.

Over 500

The number of volunteer hours put into the maintenance at Manitoba Cabin! Whether it’s tabling at events in town, scrubbing dishes at the Spring Work Weekend or stacking 8 cords of wood at Wood Stock, our volunteers are critical to Alaska Huts. Thank you SO much to all of our dedicated volunteers – we truly could not have done it without you.

15+

The number of nights spent hosting school groups and nonprofits at a discounted rate. Your membership dollars made it affordable for the Alaska Avalanche School, Camp Fire, Steller Secondary School and countless other groups throughout the year to use Manitoba to inspire the next generation of outdoor stewards.

5

The number of workshops offered to the public at Manitoba. They included Family Fun Camp, Babes in the Woods and Nature Photography. Keep an eye on our website for our 2017 offerings – registration is currently open for a spring edition of Family Fun Camp!

And a BIG One…

Our Glacier Discovery Business Plan was reviewed by the Forest Service and they liked what they saw! After years of hard work, we’re happy to announce this milestone bringing us ever closer to our vision of a hut system along the Rail Road Whistle Stop. We are excited to keep moving forward on this project in the coming months to bring more opportunities for family-friendly outdoor recreation to Alaska. Stay tuned as we keep pushing—with your help—to make this dream a reality!

All told we expect 2017 will bring new opportunities, challenges, and fun adventures outside—and we’re looking forward to sharing more information about upcoming ways to get involved with Alaska Huts, both in Anchorage and out in the mountains. Hope to see you skiing in the spring sunshine on Manitoba, stacking wood with us this fall, or cozying up around the wood stove in the cabin. Thanks for your continuing support to help us connect people to the outdoors!

Best,

Tom Callahan
